Restoring the Encanto-Palmcroft lights, for the next generation

The restoration of Encanto-Palmcroft's historic cast streetlights begins with a single pole — carefully removed and hand-delivered to historic preservation specialists in El Paso, Texas, where the plan to preserve the neighborhood's lights takes shape.

About the project

Deconstructed, re-cast, and rebuilt — not replaced.

These lights have stood over Encanto-Palmcroft for generations. Decades of weather and wear have taken a toll on the original castings — visible in the corrosion at the bases and joints — so rather than swap them for modern replacements, the City of Phoenix is having them fully restored.

It starts with one pole. The first light is being carefully removed and hand-delivered to a historic preservation team in El Paso, Texas. Working from that original, the team will deconstruct and document every component and create molds, so new parts can be cast that match the historic profile exactly — from the glass globe and brass band down to the ornamental base. This first restoration establishes the plan for preserving the rest of the neighborhood's lights going forward.
